Eindhoven’s city centre is undergoing a major redevelopment with climate adaptation as a central focus. The municipality of Eindhoven is replacing the outdated sewer system with an innovative separated system that is prepared for extreme rainfall. Rockflow® plays a crucial role in this transformation, providing a flexible infiltration buffer that enhances the city’s resilience for the future.

The challenge: limited space below-ground

The city centre faces outdated sewage infrastructure and limited space due to existing cables and pipelines. The high groundwater level and heavy traffic load in the city centre make it particularly challenging to find suitable locations for rainwater storage.

A solution thanks to the flexibility of Rockflow

As part of the redevelopment, a Rockflow stone wool infiltration buffer of 622 m³ was installed as part of the separated sewer system. A Rockflow system consists of individual stone wool blocks that together form an integrated water storage system. These blocks can easily be installed around existing cables and pipelines. A reinforced variant of stone wool enables rainwater storage even in the narrow space between the groundwater level and the surface, while also being strong enough to handle heavy traffic loads.

Result

The city centre is future-proof: less water nuisance, a more robust sewer system, and valuable rainwater is now filtered and returned to the ground.

A sustainable long-term solution

The installation of the Rockflow infiltration buffer contributes to a climate-resilient city by locally collecting, filtering, and returning valuable rainwater to the ground. This eases the load on the sewer system and helps combat drought. The system is designed to last over 50 years. With its cleanable design, it remains efficient over time and offers a cost-effective long-term solution.

The great advantage of the Rockflow system is its flexibility. If you encounter a cable or pipeline, you can adjust or shorten the system, or build around the obstacle… This allows us to work effectively even in crowded underground environments. And we don’t have to wrap it in geotextile!
